Farmers Dave and Dani welcome you to Cross Island Farms, the region's certified organic meat and vegetable farm, on Wellesley Island, the largest of the American islands. They practice sustainable agriculture through natural mulching and crop rotation in our gardens and through intensive rotational pasture management for our livestock.
When you reserve a tour, you'll have a chance to sample some in-season hierloom vegetables, and meet the heritage breed pigs, goats, chickens, ducks and beefers, as well as dogs Gemini, Snow Toes & Splash Gordon, who love to pull us on Dave and Dani on skis during the winter months throughout the farms 102 acres. You'll also see and learn about our recently installed renewable energy solar array and small wind turbine, and our new edible Forest Garden, a permaculture planting of perennial fruits, nuts, berries, herbs and greens.
Year-round on-farm primitive camping is also offered: hike, ski or snowshoe one-quarter to one half mile to your private campsite with views of woods, ponds and pastures, with the amenities of Wellesley Island State Park just one mile away.
Open for business year-round, Cross Island sells eggs, meat and vegetables produced on the farm at a self-service roadside farm stand, open 7 days a week and 24 hours a day, which we relocate to the front porch off-season. Special orders are also always welcome. Volunteers eager to work on the farm and learn about organic crop and livestock managements are always welcome.
